The organism that causes Lyme disease is a spirochete bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi that is picked up by ticks, they carry it around, and transmit the bacteria into the creatures they feed upon. The symptoms are: fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, lameness, sensitivity to touch, depression, general stiffness and joint pain and swelling of the joint. Untreated Lyme disease can cause fatal kidney failure; serious cardiac and neurological effects may also occur.
Treatment includes antibiotics, usually for at least 30 days.
